KSS/1SWCF – Social work with children and family

Course objectives:

The aim of the course is to introduce social work with children and families. Students will be acquainted with the system of social and legal protection of children in the Czech Republic, social services for families and children and typical methods for social work with these target groups (case study, task-oriented approach, communication box, assessment of the situation of the child etc.).

Students will get familiar with the historical context and current trends in this area of social work. Visits and discussions with social workers focusing on children and family will be part of the course.

Content:

  1. Function and importance of family for healthy development of the child.
  2. Historical development of social work with family.
  3. Social risks for the family in contemporary society.
  4. Social work with children and young people at risk.
  5. System of social and legal protection of children in the Czech Republic.
  6. Social services for families, teenagers and children.
  7. Specifics of children growing up outside functional family environment.
  8. Problems of alternative family care.
  9. Methods and tools for social work with children, adolescents and families.
  10. Current trends in social work with children, teenagers and families.

Requirements on students:

Students will complete all assigned readings as well as all written assignments in due time. Active participation in seminars. At the end of the semester, they will pass a written exam.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge – knowledge resulting from the course:

  • Identify appropriate methods for social work with children, adolescents and the family
  • Describe historical context and current trends in social work with children, adolescents and families
  • Explain the importance of alternative family care

  • Assess situation of the individual and his / her family

KSS/1CSW – Contact as key feature of social work

Course objectives:

The course focuses on one of the basic tools of social work – contact. The aim is to make students familiar with the concept and essence of contact in social work, to show its specificity and help to reflect the specificity and limits of the relationship, its actors (social worker and client) and the importance of their context. More specifically, the course will focus on contact in low-threshold services. Emphasis will be placed on teaching through case histories drawing from social workers’ practice. Important parts of the course are visits in low-threshold services and involvement in their activities.

Content:

  1. Principles of creating a professional relationship between a social worker and a client (understood
    as an individual, family, group and community)
  2. Risks of dual relationships in the profession of social work (personal relationships, special
    relationships, sexual relations, online relationships)
  3. Reflection of the boundaries in social work intervention and cooperation with the client
  4. Code of Ethics of Social Workers of the Czech Republic and its application in contact work
  5. Outreach work

KSS/1RMSW – Research methods for social workers

Course objectives:

The course focuses on understanding the basic principles of qualitative and quantitative methodology as well as the principles of preparation and implementation of a research project. Students will learn to distinguish between different research approaches and will use practical training to get familiar with basic research methods: questionnaire survey and selected types of qualitative interviews.

Content:

  1. Evidence based practice
  2. Ethical principles of research in social work
  3. Formulation of research problem and research design
  4. Problems of measurement and data collection – questionnaire survey
  5. Qualitative research methods – interviews
  6. Analysis of quantitative and qualitative data

Requirements on students:

Students are supposed to study literature, participate in seminars, work continuously on their tasks and to pass a written exam.
